THE PRODUCT

What is ACTIFUSE?

ACTIFUSE is a synthetic bone graft made by Baxter. It is built from the same minerals as your own bone, with a small amount of silicon added, the level shown to speed up new bone growth. The surgeon packs it where your spine needs to fuse. Bone cells attach to it, grow through it, and replace it. When healing is done, what is left is your own bone.

It has been FDA cleared and used in American spine surgery since 2007. Surgeons in our region have used it for over a decade, and the reason they give on camera is simple: it stays where they put it.

How ACTIFUSE works, in 73 seconds

The silicate surface draws in bone-building cells, new bone grows through the scaffold, and the graft is replaced by your own bone.

THE PROOF

Does ACTIFUSE actually work?

An independent Johns Hopkins review of 694 patients found a 93% fusion rate, the same rate as BMP-2, the $900 to $5,500 biologic. A randomized trial found something more: patients who got ACTIFUSE reported less back pain at every check-up, statistically significant at six months. That trial was funded by the manufacturer, 103 patients, and we tell you that up front.

And it works alone. The same review found no significant difference between ACTIFUSE by itself and ACTIFUSE mixed with bone harvested from your hip. That can mean one less incision, in a spot where half of harvest patients report lasting pain.

How ACTIFUSE heals a fusion

The surgeon packs it in
Shaped by hand or delivered through an applicator, it stays put against the bone.
Your bone cells attach
The silicon-modified surface attracts the proteins your bone-building cells grab onto.
New bone grows through it
The graft is a scaffold, 80% porous, and new bone fills it from the inside out.
The graft disappears
Your body resorbs it and replaces it. What remains is your own living bone.

THE STRAIGHT ANSWER

Will smoking stop my fusion from healing?

It can. In one study, 42% of smokers did not heal, against 8% of non-smokers. Nicotine interferes with bone healing directly, and that includes vapes, patches and gum. We sell bone graft, and quitting will still do more for your fusion than anything we sell.

That is the honest way we run this whole site. Where ACTIFUSE wins, we show the study. Where it ties, we say it ties. Your surgeon will check anyway.
